hb = hold bend not half bend (=wb)
Mitch Mitchell, jazz/rock drumming pioneer, gets another chance
to display his chops, this time within the context of the song via the breaks
provided during the intro and also the verses. As usual he's right on the
money, and furthermore, when he's not doing explosivee solos or fills, he is
constantly propelling Jimi's inspired playing to even greater heights.
The extent of his contribution to the overall sound of The Experience is
often overlooked and, as ace drummer/transcriptionist Dave Hershey would
agree, still some of the most adventurous rock drumming ever heard.
On the origional studio version from 'Are you Experienced?' there are two
lead guitars playing single notes in unison during the bridge solo.
To better replicate the sound of twin guitars in this version, you'll note
that Jimi uses unison bends throughout this section and in his ad-libbed
outro solo. If you ever want to fatten up the sound of one of your own
solos or, in fact, any melody, unison bends are definitely the ticket.
Another means to the same end is octave-doubling, which was popularized by
the late Wes Montgomery, and occurs in this song during the intro.
Peace, Paul.
